It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Dr. Marvin Holtz, Professor of Biology, on May 29, 2021. Dr. Holtz had been a beloved member of the ABAC family since joining us as an Assistant Professor of Biology in August 2001. He was promoted to Associate Professor in August 2005, granted tenure in August 2006, and promoted to Professor in August 2010. Dr. Holtz received a Biology B.A. from Lyon College (formerly Arkansas College), a Biology M.S. from Niagara University, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Florida State University, and had held positions at Andrew College, Tricounty Technical College, Lexington Community College, Cumberland University, and several other institutions before joining us here at ABAC. Here at ABAC Dr. Holtz had a reputation as a masterful instructor, offering anatomy and physiology lectures and labs, nutrition, biological research methods, medical terminology, and senior seminar. He worked tirelessly on behalf of ABAC and our students, advising ~50 students per semester, and serving on countless committees. His efforts on curriculum development within the Department of Science and Mathematics and as Chair of the School of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee are particularly noteworthy; he helped develop many of the curriculum related policies and procedures in place today and was a key figure in the development of our bachelor’s degrees and academic minors within the School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Holtz was a gifted instructor, a dedicated member of the ABAC family, and an excellent colleague. He will be terribly missed.
His greatest accomplishment was being a loving devoted father to his one son, Michael Holtz of Tifton
