Mattie Jewell (Tomlinson) Padgett

April 13, 1931 ~ February 17, 2020 (age 88)

Obituary

Mattie Jewell Padgett, 88, passed away on February 17, 2020 in Tifton, Georgia. She was the widow of
Donald Padgett, surviving him after only two weeks. They shared 70 years of marriage together and
were truly inseparable.   A graveside service is being planned and we be announced later
Born April 13, 1931 in Doles, Worth, Georgia, Jewell was the daughter of Rupert Ivan Tomlinson and
Mattie Lou Johnson. During the Great Depression, she spent her childhood traveling to many places in
South Georgia and North Florida due to her family working in the naval stores (turpentine) industry. As
a teenager, she attended Ashburn High School, lettering in Girls Varsity Basketball (playing the half-court
version). After graduating, she married Donald in 1950. They both worked at Jayco Pants and then
Manhattan Textile Company for many years. Her second career was a very fulfilling occupation of
leading a team of young people with intellectual disabilities, giving them life lessons and enriching their
social skills. Her retirement years were spent looking after her pecan grove; driving her tractor until she
was 86 years old.
For many years, Jewell taught Sunday school at Westside Baptist Church, where her son Phil played the
organ in the music ministry. After Phil left for college, she became a faithful member of First Baptist
Church of Ashburn. Jewell was a great Christian prayer warrior.
Jewell is survived by her grandchildren Kip Padgett, Victoria Carlini, and Sabrina Kaar, and daughter-in-
law Lee Ann Padgett, all of Gainesville, FL. Four great-grandchildren also survive her. She was
predeceased by her husband Donald Padgett and her son Phillip Padgett.
Memorial donations may be made to Albany ARC (www.albanyarc.org).
