Mary Nell Spruill

With great sadness, the family of Mary Nell Spruill announces her passing on December 3, 2025. Prior to her hospitalization, she resided at Berrien Co N.H. in Nashville, GA after suffering a stroke in February 2018. She is survived by three children and their families: Clyde Smith of Oklahoma City, OK, his daughter Lindsey; Morgan (Rhonda) Spruill of Nashville, GA, their children Emily and Brody; Melanie Spruill of Delmar, MD, her children Cameron and Pierre. The apple of her eye was her first great-grandchild, Maleea “Tootie Frootie” Spruill. Survivors also include two brothers Keith Wiggins (AL), Jackie Wiggins (MS) and a sister Christine McGuire (OH), and a host of nieces, nephews and their families. Mary (aka Mary Nell, or Mernie) was born on May 26, 1938, in Crystal Springs, MS where she graduated from C.S. High School in 1956. She married James “JC” Spruill (who passed in 1988) in 1963 and was a housewife and mother for nearly 20yrs. She relocated to Salisbury, MD in 1988 where she worked in retail until her retirement in 2005. She was once described as “spicy” by one of her customers which was a great description for her. After retirement, she enjoyed trucking across country with her dear friend Dave until his death in 2010. She loved sports! As a longtime Atlanta Braves fan, she was so happy when her son took her to a game after moving back south. She loved the San Antonio Spurs and U- Conn girls’ basketball. Of course, like any good southerner, the Saints were her favorite football team. While able, she attended almost every sporting event that her grandchildren participated in; she was their number one fan! Mary never met a stranger; she would talk to anyone about anything. For her family, this was embarrassing at times, but in retrospect, what a wonderful quality to have! And, if she liked you, you knew it, but if she didn’t, you knew that too. Although her quirks, and bluntness, were uncomfortable at times, what great stories they made which we still laugh at today! To honor our mother, we ask that you strike up a conversation with a stranger! Not just a “hello”, but a conversation in her memory. You never know how you may affect someone with just your words. Also, we ask that you embrace and spend time with your elders, please cherish them while you can!
